Network Monitoring Engineer

The Network Monitoring Engineer, or NMS Engineer, will be directly responsible for the selection, design, configuration and automation of the existing and new Network Management System (NMS) . In additional, the NMS engineer will help to create a training curriculum for Operations staff on the NMS.

Responsibilities:

• Manage Hierarchical Nagios installations
• Create new plugins for Nagios
• Design and Deploy OpenNMS Infrastructure.
• Manage existing open source and in-house developed NMS tools
• Assess network monitoring needs and determine future tool requirements
• Create new NMS tools as needed
• Interface all network monitoring systems with existing monitoring framework used in the Systems Operations Center.

Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of routers, switches and related network hardware.
• 3-5 years experience as network administrator or network engineer.
• Minimum of 5 years experience in perl programming in a Unix/Linux environment.
• Experience in programming in C or C++ in a Unix environment
• Deep working knowledge of SNMP (simple network monitoring protocol)
• Working knowledge of Nagios or other similar open source NMS tools
• Extensive experience in using SQL databases.
• Experience with Juniper, Cisco, Foundry, and F5 product lines.
• Experience with varieties of Open Source Network Management Systems software.

Special Knowledge/Skills Required:

• Strong knowledge of UNIX/Linux architecture.
• Strong knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals.
• Ability to constantly learn new skills, both networking and systems.
• Ability to prioritize efforts without constant management involvement
• Must have excellent problem solving skills, and a willingness to exercise them on a daily basis
